Teaching Methodologies

The following teaching-learning methodologies will be used:

1. Verbal Methodologies (say) / Intuitive Methodologies (show), Exhibition, Explanation, Dialogue. Expositive Methodology, using audiovisual media to explain programmatic contents.
2. Active Methodologies (do), Case Study. Active Methodology, through the resolution of practical cases and discussion of case studies and scientific articles.
3. Collaborative methodologies, through group work.

Learning Results

This curricular unit aims to provide an elementary understanding of the context, activities and tools of organizational management. It also seeks to raise students’ awareness of the need to learn how to manage the ambiguity and complexity inherent in management activities. Throughout this curricular unit students will have the opportunity to explore relevant aspects of the theory and practice of contemporary management, deepening some topics addressing recent trends in this area. They should also understand the limits and contributions of the various scientific areas to the management knowledge body, distinguishing the theoretical body from management practices. Students should be able to make an approach to management as a field of study, exposing students to the main lines of research. Finally, it aims to develop an initial set of knowledge, skills and attitudes indispensable to the exercise of management positions and that will be deepened and developed in other curricular units of the cycle of studies.

At the end of the curricular unit, students should be able to:
– Recognize the fundamental principles and evolution of management thinking.
– Apply the fundamental management practices, adapting them to the specific context and needs of the organization.
– Know the theory and practice of contemporary management from the perspective of planning, organization, leadership and control functions; – Identify the main challenges and current trends of management;
– Critically analyze the scientific literature of the field and identify areas where they may develop research.
– Recognize the fundamental principles and evolution of management thinking.
– Introduce the concept of general management and analyse the fundamental functions of management and its interdependence.
– Apply the basic concepts of management, with main focus on the most relevant functional areas of organizations.
– Analyze the main functional areas of organizations, such as human resources management, productive, financial, quality, accounting.
– Identify the various levels of management and the main tasks of managers.
– View the company as a social organization with its own characteristics
– Describe the organization process and the various types of departmentalization used in the definition of organizational structure of a company.
– Establish the concepts of authority and delegation, responsibility, centralization and decentralization and their relations with the various organisational structures, advantages and disadvantages and options to be taken.
– Analyze how the type of structure of an organization is determined by several variables, such as strategy, its age and size, technology, the environment and the existing forms of power and control.
– Analyze the main contributions of theories on motivation for management.
– Analyze the various studies on leadership and reflect on its importance in the organizational context.
– Describe the communication process within an organization.
– Apply the fundamental management practices, adapting them to the specific context and needs of the organization.
– Use models and management tools to assist decision making.
