Neurophysiology

Base Knowledge

Students should possess previous knowledge on Human Anatomy and Physiology, Biochemistry and Biophysics.

Teaching Methodologies

The adopted methodology is actively expository, using slides, videos and texts.

Learning Results

The student must acquire:

– Knowledge on the organization of the nervous system, in order to recognize its key cells, and their communication pathways. The student should also be able to identify the main functional subdivisions of the nervous system (motor, sensory, special senses and regulatory systems) and cognitive functions, relating this knowledge with some features of modern Neuroscience.

– Skills on identification and description of neuroanatomical structures, recognition and description of the neurophysiological processes, and central integration of motor and sensory information.

– Competences to develop their knowledge in Neurophysiology, based on the scientific method and considering the most recent advances on this topic; correlate and integrate neurophysiologic dysfunctions with neuroanatomical features, aiming to contribute for scientific discussion in the context of a multidisciplinary team.

Program

– Organization of the Nervous System:

  • Neurons and glial cells
  • Signalization and cell comunication
  • Synaptic transmission, neurotransmitters, synaptic plasticity

– Sensory system

– Pain

– Motor system

– Special senses: vision, hearing and balance

– Cognitive functions: speech and memory, spatial navigation, executive function and personality.

– Regulatory systems: Circadian rhythm and sleep.

– Hot topics in current neuroscience.
