Base Knowledge
It is recommended that students possess base concepts of algebra and mathematical analysis.
Teaching Methodologies
The curricular unit will be taught through theoretical-practical classes, seeking, however, to make a clear distinction between a theoretical component and an essentially practical component.
These will address the various concepts relevant to the course, using, whenever possible, problematic situations.
During the classes, the use of technology for data processing will be provided, more specifically the SPSS computer software and the graphic calculator.
Learning Results
Students in this course should:
* acquire and understand essential knowledge of both Descriptive Statistics, Inferential Statistics and Graph Theory, demonstrating its usefulness in the context of Tourism;
* know how to equate the problem under study and intelligently apply Statistics, with emphasis on exploring statistical processes and interpreting the results in the field of Tourism;
* know and apply appropriate statistical and Graph Theory methods to solve problematic situations in the scope of Tourism
Program
The course comprises the following topics:
1. Purpose of Statistics. The statistical problem. Statistics Methodology. Population and Sample. Sense and Probing. Sampling methods.
2. Descriptive Statistics: measurement; types of scales; frequency distributions and graphical methods for summarizing data. Position measures (central tendency and others) and dispersion measures. Probability. The Normal curve and standard “scores”.
3. Correlation of variables. Spearman and Pearson correlation coefficients. Regression analysis: determination of the regression line equation.
4. Introduction to Inferential Statistics. Hypothesis tests and confidence intervals.
5. Introduction to Graph Theory. Euler paths and circuits. Euler’s Theorems. Hamilton paths and circuits. Little’s Algorithm.
