Generic mathematical knowledge
Teaching Methodologies
All classes will be theoretical-practical. In them, concepts of descriptive statistics, inferential statistics and Graph Theory will be treated, resorting whenever possible to problematic situations. During the classes, the use of technology for data processing will also be provided, more specifically the SPSS computer software and the graphing calculator.
Assessment Methods
The assessment in this UC will be carried out by the students in one of two ways:
a) Continuous assessment
The classification obtained in the continuous assessment modality will result from the sum of the following components:
– two tests, each rated from 0 to 6 values (60%);
– a group work, rated from 0 to 8 values (40%).
b) Assessment by exam.
Learning Results
Students should:
– Acquire and understend the essential knowledge on Descriptive Statistics and Inferential Statistics demonstrating its usefulness on Applied Quantitative Methods for Gastronomy and Tourism context;
– learn how to project and to apply intelligently Statistics, with emphasis on the exploration of statistical procedures and interpretation of results of the Gastronomy and Tourism;
– know appropriate statistical and optimization methods to solve problematic situations in the Gastronomy and Tourism context.
Program
1. Purpose of Statistics. The Statistical problem. Statistical Methodology. Sample. Sampling methods.
2. Descriptive Statistics – Measurement; types of scales, frequency distributions and graphical methods for summarizing data. Measurements of position (and other central tendency) and measures of dispersion. Probability. Normal Curve and “scores” standard.
3. Correlation variables. Spearman and Pearson correlation coefficients. Regression Analysis: determining the equation of the regression line.
4. Introduction to Inferential Statistics. Hypothesis testing and confidence intervals.
5. Introduction to Graphs Theory. Paths and Euler’s circuits. Theorem of Euler. Paths and Hamilton’s circuits. Little’s Algorithm.
