Teaching Methodologies
The contents to be taught should be implemented using theoretical and practical classes, in order to
encourage debate, research on issues and problems relating to Deaf Culture, the deepening of programmatic
issues and monitoring of work and / or various activities that will be developed by students.
The assessment will comply with the regulations of the 1st cycle courses of the School of Education, and
students may choose to be assessed by frequency or by final exam:
Continuous assessment – 1 test – 50.0%
Research, presentation and discussion of a theme – 50.0%
Assessment by examination – 100.0%
Learning Results
Explain the concepts of Society and Community;
– Discuss the concept of Culture and identity in society;
– Identify the social and cultural characteristics about the Deaf community and culture;
– Understand the cultural changes in societies over time;
– Critically analyze the social, cultural and ethical issues that arise in today’s global society.

1. Society, culture and individual:
– The social construction and culture;
– Socialization and individual freedom;
– Cultural Identity: retrospective and prospective identities and Deaf culture;
– Cultural Diversity: Ethnocentrism and Cultural Relativism – concepts and historical context.
– Society and minorities – the example of the Deaf Community;
– The cultural change today: globalization.
2. Social and cultural organization – The concepts: society, community and associations.
– The historical evolution of the Deaf Community in Portugal and internationally.
