Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics

Base Knowledge

Basic knowledge in Physics.

Teaching Methodologies

Lectures – theoretical exposition of each subject, preferably through Power Point presentations.

Practical classes – theoretical and practical applications, presentation of measuring devices followed by practical demonstrations of its operation.

Learning Results

The aim of this course is to give students basic concepts and scientific basis of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer. The student should be able to:
Understand the basic laws of thermodynamics, particularly at the level of fluid behaviour and theoretical thermodynamic cycles and their applications.
Understand and be able to apply the laws of fluid mechanics to incompressible fluids in pipes.
Understand the various mechanisms of heat transfer;
Be able to select pipes thermal insulation;
Identify, formulate and solve problems involving heat transfer.

Program

Module 1-Thermodynamics – 35 hours Fundamental concepts. Properties of pure substances. Application of the first law of Thermodynamics to open systems and closed systems. Introduction to the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Thermodynamic cycles. Fluid Mechanics Module 2 – 20 hours Fluid properties. Static of fluids. Flow characteristics. Laminar flow in pipes. Turbulent flow in pipes. 3-Heat Transfer Module – 20 hours Modes of heat transfer. Heat transfer equations. Steady state one-dimensional conduction: Flat walls; Cylindrical systems.
