This Curriculum Unit is structured on the basis of an active pedagogical model, student-centered, on
accessibility, on active knowledge acquisition and the construction and encouragement of critical thinking skills.
It is intended to promote the interaction, sharing of ideas and joint construction of knowledge based on the
plurality of experiences and backgrounds. The student is allowed to deepen his knowledge according to his
inclination towards the different animal species of zootechnical interest. The teaching methodologies include
exposure to theoretical classes with emphasis given on student’s research and elaboration of works within the
framework of UC and in research and joint discussion of these individual works, giving the student the freedom
to choose the issues within the objectives to be achieved. The students have articles for required reading and
some others as optional study.

The student should develop critical thinking skills and obtain the knowledge on basic principles for maintaining
animal health :
1. Understand the holistic approach of livestock production;
2. Understand the importance of 5 needs of Huge for each animal species
3. Understand the anato-physiological relationship between homeostasis, stress and animal welfare;
4. Obtain knowledge on general concepts of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics;
5. Know the alternative therapies, including homeopathy and herbal medicine;
6. Know the main pathologies that affect the different animal species

1) Stress e bem-estar: fundamentos anatomofisiológicos; 2)Bem-estar, maneio e saúde: a) avaliação dos
constrangimentos ao bem-estar animal nas diferentes espécies animais e metodologias de avaliação; 3)
Anatomofisiologia dos sistemas digestivo, respiratório, urinário e pele: sua relação com o metabolismo e
homeostasia: a) Topografia dos orgãos; b) Estrutura e fisiologia dos pulmões, rins e fígado; c) Estrutura da pele
e função; d) O sistema digestivo (absorção e excrecção). 4) Resistência e susceptibilidade (o papel do aparelho
imunológico); 5) Identificação de sinais de doença; 6) Toxicologia, farmacodinâmica e farmacocinética; 7) Tipos
de moléculas químicas e dinâmica de ADME; 8) Acção de diferentes moléculas. 9) Principais patologias nas
diferentes espécies animais; 10) Fundamentos da acupunctura, homeopatia e bioterapias veterinárias:
avaliação holística e aplicação. Metodologias de extracção, avaliação, purificação e aplicação dos princípios
activos.
