Base Knowledge

Nutritional characteristics of children and adolescents. Energy and nutritional needs. Determination methods.

Teaching Methodologies

The curricular unit will be developed according to a theoretical model with moments of structured exposition of the contents and respective analysis and discussion or debate. An interrogative and interactive methodology will be used prior to the presentation of the main contents and concepts, and demonstration/exemplified by viewing films and their practical application in everyday situations.

Learning Results

In this curricular unit will be carried out a systematic and integrated approach of the etiological, pathophysiological, clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of some common pathologies in pediatric age and the respective nutritional therapy to be applied.

At the end of the course, the student will:

1. know the pathophysiological and etiological aspects of the presented pathologies;

2. be able to characterize the nutritional therapy applicable to each pathology, according to the health or illness of the child or adolescent;

3. have acquired the basic knowledge necessary for the interpretation of clinical cases and the calculation and implementation of adequate dietary plans for each of the presented pathologies;

4. have perfected work skills in multidisciplinary teams.

1. Concepts in pediatric clinical nutrition.

2. Changes in nutritional status. Nutritional risk. Malnutrition. Nutritional deficiencies.

3. Food allergies and intolerances.

4. Childhood obesity 

5. Gastrointestinal pathology –  inflammatory bowel disease and celiac disease

6. Dyslipidemias, congenital heart disease and cardiomyopathies

7. Cystic fibrosis.

8. Diabetes mellitus.

9. Hereditary disorders of metabolism.

10. Epilepsy. Cerebral palsy.

11. Disorders in eating behavior.
