Environmental Education

Teaching Methodologies

In class are carried out activities in which students put into practice the principles of environmental
education by reading and discussing papers, individual and group work, seminars, analysis of practical
experiences, case studies and visits. Theoretical fundamental information is provided by lectures,
literature and audio-visual resources. Evaluation is carried out by test and monographs (40%) and the
development of a EE project, its oral and written defence (60%). Hours not in attendance: reading and
analyzing documents and books, individual and group work and field data collection.

Learning Results

1. To know the terminology and basic concepts of environmental education, as well as relevant aspects
related to spaces, programs, agencies and publications.
2. To know, understand and consider the complexity of environmental problems and the environmentally
ethical attitudes and behaviours of organizations and their professionals.
3. To valorize the natural and humanized heritage as an important resource in the educational processes.
4. To acquire skills to valorise and techniques necessary for programming and implementing
Environmental Education (EE) actions that contribute for a better environment, applying the concepts and
knowledge of EE.

Program

3.5. Syllabus:
1. Concepts and purposes of Environmental Education (EE).The concept of EE and its historical and
ideological developments in Portugal and worldwide. General notions of formal and informal education.
2. The environmental issues and the socio educational intervention: strategies and methodological
resources. The role of EE in changing attitudes and behaviour of citizens and its contribution for
sustainable development. The heritage interpretation. The profile and skills of environmental educators.
3. Projects and programs of EE. Sustainability. Development, implementation and evaluation of EE actions
(plans, programs and activities).
