Teaching Methodologies

Theoretical and practical lessons have a component of expository discussion/application of knowledge. In a second phase support will be provided to students to prepare Hygiene and Safety plans of different facilities/work environments. A field visit to a model company will enable the students to contact with a concrete situation. The assessment may be continuous or final exam. Continuous assessment presupposes carrying out: a frequency (50%) and elaboration and discussion of a Health and Safety Plan (50%). The assessment by final exam consists of a written test. Throughout the semester there is tutorial time available to students, outside the lessons context, to support understanding of the subject matter for the preparation for exams and frequencies.

Learning Results

The aim of the course unit is the acquisition of skills in relation to Health and Safety in the activity, such as knowledge of applicable law, the identification and use of protective equipment and the preparation of Safety Plans. It is intended that the students will acquired skills that will enable them to collaborate in defining the company’s general policy on the prevention of risks for the planning and implementation of an appropriate management system, the development of the design of occupational hazards assessment procedures, programming and development of measures of prevention and protection and technical coordination of the activities of safety and hygiene.

Fundamentals of Health and Safety, safety costs versus accidents costs at work, meaning and importance of prevention. National laws and EU regulations. Statistics of industrial accidents. Personal and collective protection equipments. Identification of Working risks, physical, chemical and ergonomic. Criteria Risk Assessment Work. Prevention activities, prevention concept, types of actions and criteria for the definition of prevention. Implementation and evaluation of prevention. Health and Safety Plans. Safety sheets procedures.
