Learning Results

At the end of the semester the student should:

• Understand languages ​​as functional and dynamic entities;

• Distinguish and define different disciplinary areas of linguistics such as Morphology, Syntax, Phonology, etc.;

• Realize the importance of the linguistic system in the communicative process, relating the different areas of the linguistic knowledge;

• Distinguish the notions of language and speech;

• Understand the linguistic implications of bilingualism;

• Know the main aspects of language acquisition;

• Distinguish the different areas of study of Phonetics (articulatory, acoustic, and perceptive);

• Recognize articulatory, acoustic, and perceptual aspects in the speech chain;

• Classify Portuguese sounds acoustically and articulately;

• Know some models of speech perception and the main explanatory theories for speech recognition words;

• Relate the articulatory characteristics of sounds with their acoustic characteristics.

Linguistics

1. The construction of Linguistics as an autonomous science (3 hours)

2. Ferdinand de Saussure´s Contributions to Modern Linguistic (1h)

3. Function and dynamics of Languages ​​- Linguistic Universals (4 hours)

4. The levels of linguistic analysis and their disciplines (4 hours)

5. Language knowledge and communication systems (4 hours)

6. Notions of Language, and Speech (4 hours)

7. The issue of Bilingualism (2 hours)

8. Language acquisition (4 hours)

9. Written Assessment (2 hours)

Phonetics

1. International Phonetic Alphabet- (4 horas)

2. Articulatory phonetics with a phonological base — (4 hours)

  • Classification and description of the vowel and consonant sounds of Portuguese

3. Aspects of acoustic phonetics — (6 hours)

   • physical properties of speech sounds;

   • suprasegmental prosodic features or properties

4. Phonology – the sound models of language — (4 hours)

   • the phonological segments,

   • minimal pairs,

    • phonological properties,

   • phonological rules,

5. Perceptive phonetics  (auditory/perceptive) — (2 hours)

   • models of speech perception,

   • theories of word recognition,

6. Introduction to auditory processing, the study of memory and its relationship with language. (6 hours)

7. Written evaluation  — (2 hours)

Visit a research laboratory on the development of oral language perception in babies or a company/research center related to Acoustic or Perceptive Phonetics (4h – counting 2 hours in the linguistics module and 2 hours in the phonetics module)
