Teaching Methodologies

The teaching and learning process is based on:

– classes of presentation and discussion of contents by teachers and students;

– species identification in the classroom and in the ESAC campus.

Learning Results

Know the bio-ecology of the different groups of vertebrate animals with forest importance in Portugal and the role they play in the ecosystem they are part of;

Know the basic aspects of the anatomy of the main groups of vertebrates;

Know the concepts associated with hunting and fishing, as well as the appropriate techniques for their sustainable exploitation;

Know the aspects associated with animal health and food safety regarding game and fish species;

Know the basic principles of game management in terms of population, habitat and predator management, and relations with Nature Conservation and other Nature Tourism activities.

Program

Module 1.          

To know the wild fauna: – the evolution of vertebrates; most important species and groups of species; their geographical distribution and by habitats; biology (anatomy, physiology, external morphology, ethology and animal health) and ecology of the different taxa with particular emphasis on species with importance for hunting and for fishing in inland waters; endangered species and protection measures.

Module 2.          

Hunting: – historical introduction; hunting exploitation (processes and means of hunting), relationships with Nature Conservation.

Fishing: – concepts and legislation about fishing in inland waters, fish exploitation.

Food hygiene aspects associated with hunting and fishing.

Planning and management: – management plans in hunting areas; population management; predator control; restocking; monitoring techniques; habitat suitability indices (HSI); relationships with other nature tourism activities, such as birdwatching.
