Learning Results

– Explain the interactions between Environment-Development-Sustainability in order to develop holistic approach skills (considering the dimensions of sustainability: environment, society and economy);
– Discuss the problems of sustainability of planet’s natural resources and the role played by renewable energies;
– Develop communication, creativity, versatility and teamwork skills;
– Identify environmental impacts and design sustainable systems of engineering;
– Identify hazards, assess and control the risk of deterioration of the biophysical system (atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere);
– Enumerate and explain general concepts and methods in the context of sustainability;
– Enumerate and explain ecological processes at large and the structure and functioning of ecosystems at local, regional and global levels;
– Develop a rigorous attitude to approach and problem solving and the ability to search and select relevant information.

1 Environmental Issues: Concepts; Interaction between organizations and the environment; Wastewaters; Waste; Flue gases; Noise; Energy; Natural resources; Biodiversity and habitats; Transboundary environmental issues.
2 Sustainable Development: Concepts; Pillars of Sustainable Development; Environmental management principles; Global development issues with environmental implications.
3 Environmental Impact Assessment of projects (EIA): Legal framework; Concepts; Objectives; Stages; Intervening entities and competences; EIA methodologies; Study cases.
4 Environmental Assessment of plans and programmes (EA): Legal framework; Concepts; Objectives; Stages; Intervening entities and competences; Similarities and differences between EA and EIA; EA with Strategic methodology.
