Separation Technology

Base Knowledge

A BSc in Science.

Teaching Methodologies

Theoretical classroom complemented with experimental implementation by the students of the different
techniques.
Completion of written test (50 %) and experimental work (50 % ). ..

Learning Results

The separation and isolation of substances ranging from single molecules to supramolecular structures is
important in the charactyerization and monitoring of biotechnological products and processes. In the separation
of simple molecules will be given a greater emphasis on the use of techniques as GC, GCMS
and HPLC? the
latter also including the preparative version. The separation of enzymes and antibodies is addressed by
separation techniques that involve molecular exclusion phenomena and immunoaffinity and through the
techniques of separation with membranes.

Program

Chromatographic techniques: Review.
GC and GCMS.
Application in the characterization of complex mixtures. Result analysis.
HPLC? Choice of columns and implementation of analytical methods. Preparative HPLC in peptides isolation.
Liquid Chromatography of molecular exclusion. Isolation of antibodies.
Membrane Separation: microfiltration, ultrafiltration. Applications.
Other techniques: centrifugation, electrophoresis.
