Teaching Methodologies

Exposure: to present the topics/content, raise issues and guide the learners’ approach;

Use of different case studies to co-create and discuss the topics under study;

Discussion and problem solving in small groups (4-5 learners), common or diverse tasks.

Learning Results

At the end, the student must demonstrate cognitive skills and competencies (knowledge and skills) in:

Health, health determinants, functioning and disability, the evolution of the health concept and models of disability;

The model of Functioning, Disability and Health and the World Health Organization classifications;

The concepts of clinical diagnosis and diagnosis in physical therapy;

Person-centered practice and evidence-based practice;

Basic interpretation of the levels, types and degrees of evidence;

The physiotherapy process and the clinical reasoning;

Simple documentation and records in physiotherapy field.

 

At the end, the student must demonstrate affective skills and competencies (emotional, behaviour and attitudes) in:

Simple clinical reasoning.

Program

  1. Health, Functioning and Disability (12 hours):

1.1 Evolution of the concept of health and the determinants of health;

1.2 Evolution of the disability models;

1.3 The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF): model, structure and terminology. The WHO International Classifications Family (ICF/ICD-11).

1.4 The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF): components, categories or domains,codes and qualifiers. Mind maps application and documentation based on ICF.

2. Health conditions vs Functioning and Disability (10 hours)

2.1 Clinical diagnosis and diagnosis in physiotherapy (human movement system);

2.2 Clinical reasoning according to the determinants of health, functioning and disability.

3. Person-Centred Practice and Evidence-Based Practice (9 hours)

3.1 Person-centred practice and evidence-based practice;

3.2 Types of studies, levels and grades of evidence/recommendation: relationship with clinical reasoning.

3.3 Relationship of Person-Centred Practice and Evidence-Based Practice with the clinical reasoning and decision-making of the physiotherapist.

4. The physiotherapy process (12 hours)

4.1 Documentation and recording (person-centred);

4.2 Examination, Assessment, Diagnosis, Prognosis (includes intervention plan), Intervention (reflection in action) and Evaluation of the outcomes;

4.3 Practical application with analysis and brief discussion of clinical cases.

4.4 Group development of a case study, following the steps and clinical reasoning developed in previous classes. Application of mind maps and registration model based on ICF.
