Teaching Methodologies

Theoretical-practical teaching with a strong practical component to be developed in the ESAC woods (hand tools component) and in the Forestry Operations and Techniques Center (COTF – Lousã, Chainsaws and brushcutters component).

Learning Results

Know the characteristics and the use of the different manual tools used in Forestry Operations and Forest Fire Defense (DFCI).

Know how to perform maintenance and repair operations on hand tools used in DFCI and Forestry Operations.

Know how to correctly use the different hand tools in DFCI and Forestry Operations work, in accordance with safety and efficacy rules.

Know the operating characteristics and application of the brushcutter and the chainsaw, in accordance with safety rules and good forestry practices.

Know how to perform maintenance and repair operations on brushcutters and chainsaws.

Know how to correctly use the brushcutter and the chainsaw in DFCI and Forestry Operations work.

Program

Module 1 – Working with hand tools:

Characterization of tools: Shovel, Pulaski, McLeod, Firecrackers, other tools. Fuel removal techniques. Techniques for opening security and containment lines. Flame smothering techniques. Operations planning and organization of DFCI teams. Security rules. Conservation and maintenance of tools.

Module 2:

Work with brushcutter:

Protection and safety at work with brushcutters. Type of cutting organs and their use. Disassembly and assembly of the brushcutter starter and its maintenance. Sharpening of different cutting elements, spare parts. Preparation of the fuel mixture. Clearing land with brambles, brush and grass. Stand cleaning. General equipment maintenance. Troubleshooting.

Chainsaw work:

Characterization of the equipment and machines to be used. Chainsaw safety devices. Disassembly and assembly of the cutting chain and chainsaw starter. Preparation of the fuel mixture. Spare parts. Chain sharpening. Cables, strops, pulleys and other auxiliary equipment. Felling and branch cutting simulators. Starting and stopping the chainsaw. Cutting initiation. Felling techniques. Felling, branch cutting, tracing and logging. Chainsaw use in DFCI. General equipment maintenance. Troubleshooting and carburetor tuning.
