Postgraduate Degree in Design Applied Illustration

Course Objectives

Coimbra Higher Education School (ESEC) develops training in the areas of Education, Applied Social Sciences and Arts, seeking to consolidate its intervention in the geographical area in which it operates and to become a reference institution in the context of Higher Education in Portugal. ESEC courses follow a multidisciplinary matrix aimed at training in areas of a practical nature, as a strategy capable of responding to the demands of current professionalism and promoting the success and insertion of its graduates into the job market. In line with the assumptions stated, and considering that illustration is today a highly important discipline and a fundamental tool in the communication processes associated with design, the relevance of creating a postgraduate course in Applied Illustration in Design is considered, which, integrating different disciplinary contributions and areas of approach, it will allow expanding the Institution’s training offer, particularly in the area of visual arts. The postgraduate course in Applied Illustration in Design is part of the field of graphic expression and communication and is aimed at acquiring knowledge and skills oriented towards different practices, applicable to different social and economic areas. In this sense, implicit training will privilege approaches that, associated with alternative communicative frameworks, provide and accentuate different views on the applicability of illustration, as well as different means of conceiving, processing and producing narratives open to multidisciplinary logics. It is also considered that the course responds to the vocation of polytechnic higher education, which favors training that tends to be oriented towards the acquisition of skills to be developed and materialized in a professional context.

Access Conditions

The following can apply for the course: a) Holders of a bachelor’s degree in the areas of arts and design. b) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree awarded following a 1st cycle of studies organized in accordance with the principles of the Bologna Process by a State adhering to this Process; c) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree that is recognized as meeting the objectives of the degree by the ESEC Technical-Scientific Council; d) Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum, which is recognized as attesting the ability to carry out this cycle of studies by the ESEC Technical-Scientific Council.

Professional Outlets

The Postgraduate in Illustration Applied to Design is qualified to work in different areas of illustration application, namely editorial illustration – printed and/or digital publications, illustration within the scope of character creation, illustration of graphic and/or advertising products, illustration for products, environments and surfaces – textile and/or ceramic, as well as Illustration in Motion Design.

Learning Objectives

Know the techniques and culture of illustration, as a resource for identifying, analyzing and reflecting on authors and reference works. Acquire technical and scientific knowledge, with a conceptual and instrumental basis, oriented towards the development of projects supported by traditional and digital representation systems or others. Provide continuity of studies leading to in-depth processes in the area of applied illustration in design, from an updated specialization perspective.
